In 2040, an explorer vessel known as the Event Horizon went missing beyond deep-space boundaries. Seven years later, the ship sends a garbled signal back to Earth that sounds a lot like a cry for help. Reporter Richard Gere is plunged into a world of impossible terror and unthinkable chaos when fate draws him to a sleepy West Virginia town whose residents are being visited by a great winged shape that sows hideous nightmares and fevered visions. Director Mark Pellington (Arlington Road) crafts a subtle chiller that brings otherworldly terror down to earth.

Telly (Leo Fitzpatrick) is on a mission to deflower as many virgins as possible. His addle-brained theory: Boffing first-timers will protect him from contracting HIV. Trouble is, he already has it. Controversial photographer-filmmaker Larry Clark follows a group of aimless New York teens around a city with few parents and fewer boundaries. Nineteen-year-old Harmony Korine (Gummo) co-wrote the raw, provocative script.
- Dazed and Confused
Director Richard Linklater's follow-up to Slacker takes an autobiographical look at some Texas teens on their last day of school in 1976. Despite the school's stratified culture, Randall Floyd (Jason London) moves easily among stoners, jocks and geeks. A star athlete, Floyd wrestles with signing a "no drugs" pledge demanded by the football coach. Like American Graffiti, Dazed and Confused is rich in period detail.
- Johnny Mnemonic
Long before there was a Neo in the Matrix, there was Johnny Mnemonic. Keanu Reeves stars as a courier (circa 2021) tasked with delivering a volatile data package stored in his brain. The trick is to get it out before it explodes, or before an angry mob of evil samurai put him in cold storage for good. Cyberpunk godfather William S. Gibson wrote the story and adapted the screenplay.
- Pulp Fiction
Fast-food-loving hit man Vince Vega (John Travolta), his philosophical partner Jules (Samuel L. Jackson), a drug-addled gangster's moll (Uma Thurman) and a washed-up boxer (Bruce Willis) converge in this sprawling, comedic crime caper. Their adventures unfurl in three stories that ingeniously trip back and forth in time. Director and co-writer Quentin Tarantino uses whip-smart dialogue to propel the most audacious and imitated movie of the 1990s.
